So what exactly is composition?

Composition is how your photo is arranged within it's "frame", or when you photo showing the rule of thirds gridlook through the camera's eye, how it's seen in the viewfinder (or lcd display). From the "Rule of Thirds" (also known as the Golden Mean) to the Triangular Composition, learning how to apply these rules will give you a head start on discovering what makes a good photo "good".

photo showing triangular composition gridWhen you see an image with real impact and eye appeal, it usually will have within it, at least one of the rules of composition. This is not, however, always the case - many experienced photographer's have broken the rules to create a unique and interesting image. In order to do that, you first need to know the rules, understand how they work and put that into practice over and over again.

This simple tutorial explains the basics of a few of the rules of composition. This tutorial was actually written for a beginning student, so there are instructions in the tutorial to submit your photos - which you certainly aren't required to do.
