Here is a simple tutorial for creating masked type from an image. If you have never done this before, you are probably asking yourself what "type masking" is exactly.
This is a type of text created from the background of an image (graphic or photo). For the most part, it's really quite simple, but can give you some interesting text effects with very little effort. In the Daylily poster below, you'll note if you look closely at the word "Daylily" that it looks as though the text was "cut out" to reveal the layer underneath.
It wasn't. I used Photoshop's "type masking" tool to type the text over a portion of the background - the type masking tool doesn't actually type the text in a colour, but creates a selection of the text from the area you typed over. You can copy this section of text and paste it anywhere - within the same image image (as you see below) or to entirely new image.
The tutorial will explain in simple terms and images how to achieve masked type giving you a final image like this sample:
