black and white with colour image, bridalMixing it Up With Black, White & Colour in Photoshop

Here's a simple way to mix it up you special images using a quick photoshop technique - this tutorial uses the rectangular selection tool, but you could also use a hand drawn selection shape, or the circular selection tool.  To spice up your finished product, add some embellishments using fun photoshop brushes or hand drawn designs of your own.

Open your image in photoshop and select the area that you' like to retain the colour in. Use the square selection tool, then copy and paste the selected area to a new layer.

Move back down to the background layer and use your favourite method for conversion and convert the background image to black and white. What you'll have now is:

  • background layer in black and white
  • layer containing the section you copied of the colour portion of the image

If you didn't want 3D framing or any outlining between the black and white and the colour image then you could flatten the layers at thispoint and be finished.

To create the frame effect create a new blank layer above the colour layer. Using the square selection tool create a rectangle somewhat larger than the colour section, but smaller than the black and white section. Fill that square with your frame colour using the bucket tool.

Select your colour, then the bucket, then click inside the square selection to fill it with colour. Then reducte the opacity of this frame layer so you can see the images below. Using the selection tool again, outline a section inside the coloured recangle that is the same size as the coloured image below. Then select cut. You should be left with a basic coloured frame. You can add more fame layers above it, concentrically smaller if you like, or just keep the one.

Set the opacity of the frame layer to 100% and apply any layer effects you like - perhaps a drop shadow to give dimension to the finished piece.

When you are happy with the finished result, flatten the image and save.

Now you've got an image that frames itself with a black and whtie version of the colour photo in the center.
